If you have searched for your own business and found nothing, or watched competitors appear above you consistently, the cause is usually one of a small number of fixable issues. Here is how the local results actually work and what to check.
How Google decides who appears
Google ranks local results on three things:
- Relevance. How well your profile matches what was searched. This is driven by your categories, services and description.
- Distance. How far you are from the searcher, or from the location in their search.
- Prominence. How well known and well regarded you appear, based on reviews, your website, citations and general presence.
You cannot change distance. You have a lot of control over relevance and prominence, and that is where the work goes.
1. Your profile is not verified
An unverified profile generally will not appear. Verification is usually by postcard, phone or video, and video verification has become common for service area businesses. Until that is complete, nothing else matters.
2. Your profile is incomplete
Profiles missing hours, categories, services, a description or photos are treated as less trustworthy than complete ones. This is the easiest fix available and most businesses never finish it. Fill in every field the dashboard offers, including the services section, which is frequently left empty.
3. Your primary category is wrong
The primary category carries more weight than any other single field. A marketing studio listed under Advertising Agency will struggle to appear for marketing agency searches. Choose the category that most precisely describes your main business, then add the others as secondary.
4. Your business details are inconsistent
If your name, address and phone number appear differently across your website, Facebook, directories and old listings, Google has less confidence that the information is correct. Pick one exact format and make it identical everywhere. This includes small things like Suite versus Ste and whether you include Ltd.
5. You have no reviews, or very few
Reviews feed directly into prominence. A business with twenty genuine reviews will usually outrank an otherwise identical business with none. Recency matters too, so a steady trickle is better than a burst two years ago followed by nothing.
Ask every customer, send the direct review link rather than instructions to find you, and reply to every review you receive.
6. You are simply further away
Proximity is powerful. If competitors are closer to the city centre or to the person searching, they may appear above you regardless of what you do. This is why service area businesses should focus on the areas they genuinely serve rather than trying to rank across the whole city.
7. Your profile is suspended or duplicated
Suspensions usually follow a guideline breach such as keyword stuffing the business name, using a virtual office, or listing a residential address inconsistently. Duplicate listings, often left over from an old listing or a previous owner, split your signals. Search your business name and address to find duplicates and request removal.
8. You are not posting or updating
An active profile is treated more favourably than a dormant one. Weekly posts, fresh photos and answered questions all signal an operating business. Most small businesses fill the profile in once and never return, which is exactly why doing this consistently is an advantage.
9. Your website does not support the profile
Your profile does not exist in isolation. A website with clear location information, service pages and local content reinforces what the profile claims. If your site never mentions Calgary in any meaningful way, that is a missed signal.
A checklist to work through
- Profile claimed and verified.
- Primary category correct, secondary categories added.
- Every field completed, including services and description.
- Name, address and phone identical everywhere online.
- At least ten genuine reviews, with new ones arriving regularly.
- Photos uploaded, with more added monthly.
- Posting weekly.
- Questions and answers filled in.
- No duplicate listings.
- Website supports the location and services claimed.
How long it takes
Once verified, a profile normally appears within days. Moving up in a competitive category takes longer, because reviews and prominence accumulate over months rather than weeks. Work through the checklist, keep the profile active, and reassess after a couple of months rather than daily.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?
The most common causes are an unverified profile, an incomplete profile, the wrong primary category, inconsistent business details across the web, no reviews, or simply being further from the searcher than competitors.
How long does it take to appear on Google Maps?
After verification a profile usually appears within a few days. Ranking well in competitive categories takes longer and depends on reviews, completeness and consistency.
Does my business need a physical address?
No. Service area businesses can hide the address and set the areas they serve. Never invent an address or use a virtual office, as profiles are removed for this.
Do reviews affect Google Maps ranking?
Yes. Review quantity, quality and recency all contribute to prominence, which is one of the three main factors Google uses for local results.
